There are three major credit bureaus in the United States: Experian, Equifax and Transunion. In addition, there are dozens of smaller credit reporting agencies or information providers. Lastly, one that is often overlooked is LexisNexis.

In 2022, most credit bureau phone numbers are public knowledge, but most work can be done online at the appropriate website. On occasion, it could be beneficial to speak to a live customer service representative.

All the credit bureaus have a general customer service support phone number. Please select the appropriate number. These customer service phone lines operate with varying hours of operations. Expect hold times and make sure you call during business hours.

  • Experian: (888) 397-3742.

Experian, Equifax and TransUnion offer consumers an opportunity to:

  • Obtain their credit report.
  • Dispute entries on their credit report.
  • Freeze your credit report.
  • Report identity theft or improper and fraudulent activity.

Everything that can be done online can also be done via the US Postal Service.

Credit Bureau Phone Numbers: Information Required

It is important to be prepared when calling a credit bureau. You should have you personal information ready to disclose, as you will be asked for you full name, Social Security number, your current and previous addressed (if you have lived somewhere less than two years) and your birthdate.

Credit Bureaus: All Work Independent

Credit Bureaus do not speak to one another. Any action you take with the credit bureau must be replicated at all three.  This is only the case if you start your dispute or contact with a credit bureau. If you are initiating contact with a creditor about incorrect information, they will likely work with all three of the agencies to help you resolve.
