As a Capital One card holder, I found my 2021 Capital One fee refunded via email. I was unaware there were issues with this in the past so I dug in a little further. Below is what I found.
Why Was My Capital One Fee Refunded?
On August 17th, 2022, I received an email from Capital One stating they will be returning my annual fee from 2021 due to lack of communication. It appears this might be an effort to head off a PR nightmare, as they are currently dealing with the fallout from their 2019 data breach. Understanding the need for good publicity and to head off another class action lawsuit, Capital One is giving back a LOT of money. I took a screen shot of the email and pasted it below, and then broke down what it all means.

The nuts and bolts on how to get your Capital One Fee Refunded from 2021.
- Capital One will refund your fee if you cancel the card. This will come in the form of a $39 dollar check.
- If you keep the card open, they will be refunding you $39 dollars and any fees or interest the charged you as a statement credit.
- Importantly, they will remove any derogatory items that occurred due to this. This part is HUGE!
This is good for credit rebuilders and repair, because you could potentially leverage this to remove negative Capital One related items, even if they don’t match the exact criteria. It is possible the credit reporting agencies will not perform the correct due diligence on the accounts disputed. Think this doesn’t work? Review my Santander article on how I removed a repossession using a similar tactic.
I will update this article as things change and will report back once I see the credit hit my account.
